Texas Representative Henry Cuellar Charged
Laurel Crowned Alumnus Charged in 600,000 Bribery Scheme
After spending four decades in public service, a six-figure bribery scandal has smeared Representative Henry Cuellar.
For over 40 years, he has served his community, but now, the most degreed member of congress is entangled in a criminal probe. According to the indictment, Cuellar and his wife are charged with taking part in a yearslong $600,000 bribery scheme.
Cuellar, a Democrat, has represented Texas's 28th congressional district since 2005. He is the son of working-class parents and the first in his family to attend college. He earned his associate degree summa cum laude from Laredo Community College before enrolling at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Cuellar has been a vocal advocate for education, and he credits his own education with informing his public service. He is a strong supporter of the TEXAS Grant program, a $341 million financial aid program that helps students from low-income families attend college.
The charges against Cuellar are a major blow to his career and to the reputation of the Democratic Party. They also raise questions about the integrity of the political system and the influence of money in politics.
Cuellar has denied the charges and has vowed to fight them in court. His trial is set to begin in September.
